Our bodies natural defenses lie in our Sympathetic Nervous System which causes our Flight, Fight, or Freeze response. (When we are faced with things, we perceive as danger, our body is filled with such neurochemicals / hormones, such as Adrenaline, and Cortisol.) Since our species began we have always had our natural defense to protect ourselves. In the past it was about threats from wild animals, hunger, and outside dangers from nature, and other people. These defenses, (our flight, fight, or freeze responses), have stayed with us, and evolved into protecting us from anything that we deem as an attack, such as bullying, shame, guilt, and not being good enough for those around us.
The information and messages / programing that we are given; from the time we are born, and into our adulthoods; lead each and everyone of us into a chronic state of fight, flight, or freeze, by our rush to school, competing for good grades, competing in sports, being told that we have to achieve, and perform as the #1 winner. This chronic state of flight, fight, or freeze, causes chronic inflammation. Learning to be Mindful, and Aware, raises our level of stillness, quiet, and playfulness, which causes the body to move away from the Sympathetic Nervous System, and move into the Para – Sympathetic Nervous System; and with the flooding of body with positive neuro – chemicals, such as dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin, and Endorphins
It seems to cause a bit of a surprise to my incoming clients, that the focus of Foundations Medical Hypnosis and Life Coaching is on using Hypnosis to gain Mindfulness to help ease body inflammation. Many clients come in and expect to be given a magic bullet which will end their presenting complaint or problem. When they are shown that their own power and energy will cause Mindfulness and Awareness, thus lower stress, anxiety and Inflammation, they are amazed at how much power they have. It is not other people and events which cause our stress and anxiety, but it is our programmed responses to other people and events.
One of the most popular and effective self groups, that has been around since 1935, is Alcoholics Anonymous, and one of the things that is taught by this group is the idea that we have no control over other people or other events, but we do have control over ourselves and our responses to outside events and other people.
Another way to describe our responses is to describe them as coping mechanisms. These coping mechanisms come in many forms, substances, such as alcohol, drugs, nicotine, food, and anger, to name a few.
